May 21, 2013
ROSWELL, Ga. – Centennial High School sent 21 students to New York City to compete against more than 3,000 students from around the world at the National High School Model United Nations Conference.

For the second consecutive year under the tutelage of CHS advisors, social studies chairman Eric Medwed and Chad Hoge, Centennial earned the conference's top prize, the Award of Distinction. Although the conference does not award individual awards, seven CHS students were asked to speak in front of the overall conference.

Those students were Nate Bramel, Isabel Carvallo, Anna Squires, Monica Bhatia, Nikki Frieman, Brooke Gillman and Chris Robb.

In the last year alone, Centennial's Model U.N. has garnered several local, regional and national awards:

National High School Model U.N. — Award of Distinction – first place

Southern United States Model U.N. — Award of Distinction – first place

Harvard Model U.N. — Best Small Delegation – first place

University of Georgia Model U.N. — Best Delegation – first place

Georgia Tech — Best Delegation – honorable mention

Student representatives from Centennial's Model U.N. explained that while winning awards is certainly a testament to the team's passion, focus and synergy as a group, their true motivators are "building skills and finding true, meaningful solutions."

Model U.N. groups are academic simulations of the United Nations, in which students role-play as delegates. In this process, students learn about current events, international relations, diplomacy and the United Nations' agenda. Participation also helps them develop skills in public speaking, research, negotiation and consensus-building while building personal confidence.
