CUMMING, Ga. — The soccer team at Pinecrest Academy now has a new director.

Coach Chris Kane was named the academy's director of soccer, said Athletic Director Tom Palmer.

"Coach Kane will take our Pinecrest soccer program to another level of excellence, from our recreational program to our varsity teams," Palmer said.

In his new role, Kane will continue to coach the varsity boys' and girls' soccer teams and he will oversee the entire soccer program, which also includes middle school boys' and girls' teams.

Tom McCabe will serve as assistant coach. McCabe served as coach this year, taking the team to the Georgia High School Association competition, where the team won against Lakeview Academy, but lost to Paideia Academy.

Kane, an Advanced Placement and honors world history teacher at Pinecrest's high school since 2008, brings coaching experience as a Division I college coach, club soccer coach and past head coach of the Pinecrest boys' and girls' varsity soccer teams.

Kane's college soccer career included a position as goalkeeper at LaSalle University in Philadelphia. After his playing career, he entered the coaching ranks at the high school and club level.

Kane has coached on the boys' side of the nationally renowned FC Delco and helped assemble a team that went on to win two USYSA national championships at the U18 and U19 age groups. He spent 10 years at the women's Division I college level.

He started as an assistant coach at his alma mater, La Salle, and then moved to Rutgers University in the Big East Conference.

After a year at Rutgers, Kane joined the University of Georgia, where he served as recruiting coordinator and goalkeeper coach. After UGA, Kane was named head coach of the Marshall University Thundering Herd. During his tenure, several of his teams and players received academic honors and all-conference honors.

Kane left the college ranks in 2008 to join Pinecrest Academy. As past head coach of the boys' varsity, his teams won two regional titles and the 2010 GISA state championship, prior to Pinecrest's transition to GHSA in 2011.

Kane has been named a two-time regional coach of the year and GISA state coach of the year.

Kane also coaches boys at United Futbol Academy in Cumming, which he joined in 2010.

He also teaches AP World history and AP European history in the high school.

Assisting Kane as head coach of the boys' and girls' varsity teams is assistant coach McCabe, the director of campus ministry and high school religion teacher.
