MILTON, Ga. – Milton High School is known for its success on many fronts. Be it academically, theatrically or on the field, Milton is almost synonymous with success.

The man in charge of the school for the past several years is Principal Cliff Jones, who recently won the North Fulton Council PTA's award for Outstanding Principal of the Year.

The Milton Herald recently sat down with him to get a better feel of the man behind the school.

Milton Herald: Where did you grow up?

Cliff Jones: I grew up in Smyrna and went to Westminster High School.

MH: Where did you go to university?

Jones: I spent four years in Scotland studying at the University of St. Andrews. The idea that you're an American abroad for four years gives you an appreciation and perspective for home. I studied modern history and got a master's degree. I will graduate May 15 will with a Master of Business Administration from Kennesaw State University.

MH: What did you want to do with your degree?

Jones: I wanted to be a lawyer. I worked as a paralegal and helped foreclose on people's houses. I learned instead that I wanted to help people. From 2001 to 2002, I went to Georgia State for a master's degree in secondary social studies education, and I landed a job at the old Milton High School. I taught in a portable classroom.

MH: What was the last book you read?

Jones: "Leaders of Learning: How District, School and Classroom Leaders Improve Student Achievement," by Richard DuFour and Robert J. Marzano. Next will be the new Dan Brown book.

MH: What was the last album you listened to?

Jones: Michael Buble's "To Be Loved." I listen to classical music on XM Radio with my son on our way in to school. I'm lucky enough to get time in the car with him.

MH: Do you have any hobbies?

Jones: I go to a lot of high school sporting events and performing arts. I enjoy watching Milton students compete and perform. I have two kids, 11 and 14, and spend much of my free time being with them and their activities.

MH: What will you do over the summer?

Jones: I spend my summertime recharging and working on strategy. I'll reconnect with my family. We will take a trip to Boston to visit family.
