'Open enrollment' applications due by May 15

7 North Fulton schools have room for transfers for next year

May 07, 2013
NORTH FULTON, Ga. – Seven schools in North Fulton are among the 21 schools in the Fulton County School System that have room for transfer students in the 2013-2014 school year under the "open enrollment" program. Parents have until May 15 to submit an application for the open spots.

Schools with room for transfer students in North Fulton include Birmingham Falls Elementary (Milton), Findley Oaks, Medlock Bridge and Shakerag elementary schools (Johns Creek), Sweet Apple Elementary (Roswell), Haynes Bridge Middle (Roswell) and Cambridge High (Milton).

The "public school choice" program was made state law in 2009 under House Bill 251, and gives parents the option to choose a school outside of their attendance zone, provided it has available classroom space to accommodate transfer students.

Schools participating in open enrollment are selected based on projected enrollment and available classroom space for the upcoming year. High school space is determined based on the state enrollment capacity. Charter schools are not included in the transfer option. School officials note that space is determined at each grade level, so approval of one child under open enrollment does not guarantee approval of siblings.

The majority of the 21 schools eligible for open enrollment are located in South Fulton, since most schools in North Fulton are near enrollment capacity. Parents whose children are accepted under the open enrollment program must provide transportation to and from the school.

The application deadline is 4:30 p.m. on May 15, and the form is available on the Fulton Schools website, www.fultonschools.org. Parents can also pick up the application at administrative locations throughout the system, including at Milton Center (the former Milton High School site in downtown Alpharetta), or at the Teaching Museum North, located at 793 Mimosa Boulevard in Roswell.

Parents will be notified of their child's transfer status by June 30. Parents whose children are currently attending school under an open enrollment transfer must apply again for next year because school capacity may change.

Approvals may be selected by lottery if the number of applicants surpasses the number of available seats at each school. If students are not chosen for their first choice of transfer, the application will be considered for the secondary choice(s).
