College lacrosse comes to North Fulton for regional championships, April 26-28

Northview HS hosts finals for ninth year

April 10, 2013
JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – Lacrosse fans can relish a 15-game marathon among the region's top college powerhouse teams at the 26th Southeastern Lacrosse Conference Championships coming to North Fulton and Forsyth April 26-28, with the semifinals and finals returning for the ninth time to Johns Creek.

The tournament features the top eight teams in Division I and Division II, and likely will include perennial powerhouses such as University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and Florida State. Participating teams and game schedules will be announced in the next few weeks at www.selctournament.com.

The SELC is the largest club lacrosse conference in the nation with 41 teams from 10 states and Washington, D.C. The SELC tournament champions will receive an automatic bid to the National Men's Collegiate Lacrosse Association Championships May 13-18 in Greenville, S.C.

Opening round games will be played in four locations: Northview High School in Johns Creek, Alpharetta High School in Alpharetta, Pope High School in Marietta and South Forsyth High School near Cumming. Semifinals on April 27 and finals on April 28 will be at Northview High for the ninth year in a row.

Four new SELC Hall of Fame inductees will be officially recognized at halftime of the Division I Championship at Northview High on April 28. An SELC alumni game is set for the morning of April 28.

Tickets cost $5 for children and $10 for adults and are available at the gate. A three-day pass costs $20. Children wearing lacrosse jerseys are admitted free.

The popularity of lacrosse in Johns Creek has grown dramatically over the last 15 years as residents move here from other parts of the country (particularly New England) where lacrosse has been popular for decades.

The city's three high schools each have girls' and boys' varsity and junior varsity lacrosse teams, and there are active younger age programs that feed into each of these schools.

Northview parents, in particular, have kept interest in the sport going, developing a close relationship with the SELC and setting the foundation for the city's existence as a nexus for the sport.
