FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. —The Forsyth County School System announced its elementary, middle and high school 2013 Teachers of the Year.

The finalists were selected using scores from a written application and interview process. A classroom observation, conducted by the Teacher of the Year Committee, which is comprised of parent, community, business and school representatives, was also part of the selection process.

The elementary school Teacher of the Year is Courtney Stokes. Stokes is a second-grade teacher at Big Creek Elementary School. She has a bachelor's degree from Syracuse University and a master's from Georgia State University in early education.

Before joining Forsyth County Schools in 2010, she taught first and second grade at Mamaroneck Avenue School, Lee F. Jackson School and Morningside Elementary School.

When not teaching, Stokes volunteers her time as an assistant troop leader for her oldest daughter's Brownie Girl Scout troop.

The middle school Teacher of the Year is Liz Watterson.

Watterson teaches seventh- and eighth-grade math at South Forsyth Middle School. She has a bachelor's and master's degree from North Georgia College and State University. Watterson started her teaching career at South Forsyth in 2005. She volunteers her time on the weekends to the Academic Bowl and Math Club competitions.

The high school Teacher of the Year is Nick Crowder.

Crowder has a bachelor's degree from Southern Illinois University and a master's degree from the University of Georgia.

Before he joined South Forsyth High School in 2008, Crowder taught at Forsyth Central High School and Vickery Creek Middle School. He advises the Technology Student Association, which sponsors community events each year such as food drives and collecting for Toys for Tots.

The 2013 Forsyth County Teacher of the Year will be announced at the annual Celebration of Excellence on Feb. 15.
