NORTH FULTON, Ga. – Board members from North Fulton were elected to the top two positions on the Fulton County Board of Education, with Linda Schultz of Roswell re-elected as president for an additional two-year term and relative newcomer Linda McCain of Johns Creek to lead as vice president.

Both members were the sole nomination for their positions, and elected unanimously without comment from their peers on the seven-member board.

With the election of Schultz and McCain, leadership positions on the board are solely in the hands of North Fulton members. Traditionally, the top two positions rotate between members from both ends of the county — with either the president or the vice president selected from one of the three members representing South Fulton schools.

Schultz, who is entering her second term as board president, said the position of president or vice president carries no more weight or power than of the other five members on the board.

"As board president, my goal is to ensure every member on the board has a voice in every matter that comes before us," said Schultz. "We work as a team on everything, and the board president has only one vote."

The primary role of the president is to facilitate meetings and to ensure enough time is spent on issues that are important to each board member, said Schultz. The vice president fills this role in the absence of the president.

Stepping down as vice president this year is Linda Bryant of South Fulton who is the longest serving member of the board, first taking office in 1993. Taking her place as vice president is McCain, who took office in 2011 and represents the Johns Creek and Alpharetta regions. A longtime PTA member and local schools advocate, she is a member of the board of directors of both the Fulton County Schools Employees' Pension Fund and the Fulton Education Foundation. McCain also serves on the school board's internal audit committee.

Schultz, who represents primarily Roswell with parts of Alpharetta and Milton, was first elected to the school board in 2005 and has served in both the president and vice president roles for much of her tenure. Schultz has served on the board of directors of the Fulton County Schools Employees' Pension Fund and the Fulton Education Foundation, and is a graduate of Leadership North Fulton.

She is currently a member of the National School Boards Association's Federal Relations Network Committee, a coalition of school board members who advocate for public education, and serves on the board of directors for Star House, an afterschool program for at-risk students.
