ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Rosasharn Brown, a seventh-grade student in the pre-upper school of Mill Springs Academy, won the Clean Water Campaign's essay contest for Fulton County. Brown's essay, titled "Stormwater Pollution in the Greater Atlanta Area," describes some of the problems the metro area is encountering locally with stormwater runoff.

Brown said she was excited about the news when she learned about winning the contest during an announcement in her literature class by teacher Michael Griffeth. Griffeth described her as being meticulous while following the directions of the essay and researching her essay topic.

"I am very proud to call myself her teacher," Griffeth said. "I suspect we can expect great things from her in the years to come."

Every one of the seventh- and eighth-grade students in the pre-upper school competed in this contest, along with students from many other schools. Sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders in Bartow, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Fulton, Forsyth, Gwinnett, Hall, Henry, Paulding and Rockdale counties were invited to participate in the 11th annual Water Essay Contest. Students were asked to write a 300- to 500-word essay about stormwater pollution and prevention. Once all essays were received, a subcommittee of the Education Technical Coordinating Committee came together to judge the essays. The best essay among the city of Atlanta and county winners was selected as the regional winner.

Although Brown's essay did not win at the regional level, it was selected as the winner for Fulton County. Representatives from Fulton County Water and the Metropolitan Water District were on hand to present Brown with a copy of her essay on a plaque, a water bottle and a monetary award at the ceremony with the entire pre-upper school community.
