January 08, 2013 MILTON, Ga. — The arts have been impacted by school budget cuts, but the Monfort's Education Fund for Youth Art is helping to keep creativity flowing at Northwestern Middle School.
The recently formed Art and Creative Club is an after school program sponsored by the nonprofit organization as well as the private and business sector. The art club also offers scholarships to help students cover their program tuition.
"Northwestern is committed to challenging students to strive to their full potential for academic excellence and personal growth," said Ashley McGill, assistant principal and club advisor.
The club created a wall mural for the school's sustainable garden, unveiling it before the holiday break.
With the direction of professional artist Maureen Engle, the club met once a week during the first semester to work on the mural.
The project inspiration came from the outdoor permaculture classroom created by the school's science teacher Dr. John Bartlett and is displayed there.
The project goal was to encourage the students to interact with the environment and create beautiful art for everyone to enjoy.
Nancy Suttles, volunteer creative director at NWMS said the program's first semester was a success.
"We are very encouraged by this new after school program model," Suttles said. "And we look forward to launching more creative programming in Milton in 2013." View images.
