Local students inducted into Phi Kappa Phi

BATON ROUGE, La. — The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi announced that the following local students were recently initiated into Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.

Elise Dismer of Alpharetta is pursuing a degree in journalism at Bradley University.

Thomas Ryan of Alpharetta is pursuing a degree in electrical engineering at Clemson University.

Maura Law of Cumming is pursuing a degree in occupational health/therapy at Georgia Health Sciences University.

Membership is by invitation and only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors, having at least 72 semester hours, are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify.

Wofford College

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Dr. David S. Wood, senior vice president of academic affairs and dean of Wofford College, announced Wofford’s Dean’s List, which includes the following local students:

Chelsea Marie Ashworth of Cumming, who achieved a 4.0 grade point average; Ellison Litton Barber of Cumming; Lauren Michelle Barter of Roswell; David Malone Blum of Roswell; and Justin William Whitaker of Alpharetta, who achieved a 4.0 GPA.

To be named to the Dean’s List, a student must be enrolled for at least 12 semester hours of graded courses and attain a semester grade point average of 3.6 or higher.

University of South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Mallory Ketchem, a 2009 West Forsyth High School graduate and Cumming resident, was recently named to the University of South Carolina’s Dean’s List.

U.S. Military Academy

WEST POINT, N.Y. — Cadet Brian Stuart Bui, son of Mr. and Mrs. Man Bui of Johns Creek, has completed Cadet Basic Training (CBT) at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

The initial military training program provides cadets with basic skills to instill discipline, pride, cohesion, confidence and a high sense of duty to prepare them for entry into the Corps of Cadets. Areas of instruction included mountaineering, hand grenades, rifle marksmanship, first aid and nuclear, biological and chemical training.

Bui graduated from Northview High School in May as a National Merit Finalist, National AP Scholar with Distinction, Lacrosse Academic All-American and a Will-To-Live Foundation scholarship recipient. He plans to graduate from West Point in 2016 and be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

Vassar College

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Matthew Arthur Pearce of Alpharetta recently graduated with a degree in chemistry from Vassar College. Pearce is the son of Jong Hee and Ralph J. Pearce of Alpharetta. In addition to his degree, he was recognized for his honors in chemistry at Vassar’s commencement ceremony.

Purdue University

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Local students took the first step in becoming Boilermakers by participating in the annual STAR program at Purdue University’s West Lafayette campus.

The participants included:

Michael Shuey of Milton, Kyle Gorman of Milton, Niklaus Sykes of Alpharetta, Shannon Castek of Alpharetta and Austin Shaw of Roswell.

Summer Transition, Advising and Registration (STAR) is Purdue’s program for new undergraduate students to receive academic advice and create their initial course schedule. New students select their one-day STAR session and come to Purdue’s West Lafayette campus to conduct this and other important business.

Academic Honors at Purdue University

In addition, the following local students have earned academic honors at Purdue University:

Gregory Vande Loo of Milton, Colleen Troke of Alpharetta, Yeonseon Kim of Alpharetta, Kimberly Lutz of Alpharetta, Christine Castek of Alpharetta, James Xu of Roswell and Mary Beno of Roswell.

To earn honors, students must have had at least a 3.5 semester or cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

Auburn University at Montgomery

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Auburn University at Montgomery announced the Dean’s List for the Spring 2012 semester includes Paige Reid, who is majoring in communications and made the Dean’s List for the School of Liberal Arts. Reid is originally from Roswell.

Hofstra University

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. — Hauzia Conyers of Alpharetta was recently named to the Dean’s List at Hofstra University.

Emory University at Oxford College

OXFORD, Ga. — The following students have been named to the Honor List of Oxford College, the two-year liberal arts division of Emory University located in Oxford, Ga. Students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher to be named to the Honor List. Area students on the list include Fabian Mettler of Alpharetta, Ji Soo Park of Suwanee and Aida Risman of Suwanee.

In addition, the following local students were named to the Merit List of Oxford College.

Students must earn a grade point average of 3.0 or higher during the previous semester to be named to the Merit List. Students from North Fulton and Forsyth County on the Merit List include:

Students must be in the top 20 percent of Emory College or have approximately a 3.859 grade point average or higher to be named to the Dean’s List.

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Roswell resident Caitlin Urwin has enrolled at James Madison University for the fall 2012 semester. Urwin has yet to declare a major.

MELBOURNE, Fla. — The following local students have announced their intent to begin studies at Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Fla. this semester:

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Two local residents graduated from Drexel University at the University’s 125th commencement ceremony. Congratulations to the following students:

Alpharetta resident Margaret Klussman received a master’s degree from Drexel’s College of Nursing and Health Professions.

HOUSTON, Texas — The University of Houston celebrated the academic achievements of its spring 2012 graduates at commencement in May at Hofheinz Pavilion. The following local residents were among more than 4,200 UH students who graduated:
