NORTH FULTON, Ga. — The all-girls robotics team First Lego League (FLL) Team "Dragon," sponsored by the Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta, took third place in their first competition Dec. 1 at the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center. The girls also brought home the Mechanical Design Award for their robot.
The team of five girls in the fifth and sixth grade received a box of NXT Lego parts in mid-September. In 60 days they not only built and programmed a robot to complete specific missions, they also researched various problems affecting people over 60. Their project to satisfy the "Senior Solutions" part of the competition was a concept for a clock that told not only the time but also the days of the week and months of the year so that seniors suffering from severe memory loss, such as dementia, could have more control over the concept of time.
The girls will progress on to the Super-Regionals the first part of January 2013.
