JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – The students of Autrey Mill Middle School's Cooks' Club recently had the chance to work with the chefs of Publix's Cooking School under the guidance of Chef Michael Maliska.
The students prepared a three-course meal and learned about kitchen safety and cooking techniques.
Then – and this is the important part – they tasted the fruits of their labor.
The Cooks' Club meets once a month at AMMS under the guidance of Chef Carlin Breinig and her assistant, Chef Vicki Kuerer, who donate their time to teach students healthy alternatives to their favorite and sometimes "not so healthy" meals, snacks and desserts.
The club sponsors are Nathalie Bernstein, Danielle Chereck, Jaimal Page and Maria Purwin. It is part of First Lady Michelle Obama's initiative, "Chefs Move to School," which is a program designed to teach healthy eating habits to youngster. The thinking is that if developed early, these healthy habits will evolve into healthy lifestyles.
