November 28, 2012 WATKINSVILLE, Ga. – Mt. Pisgah nearly pulled off a huge upset in the first round of the Class A private school playoffs last Friday night, losing 17-13 to top-seeded Athens Academy Spartans.
The Patriots, the lowest seed of the 16 private school teams selected for the playoff bracket, took a 13-0 lead in the second quarter and made that score stand up until early in the final period.
But on fourth-and-11 from their 39, the Spartans hit a 61-yard touchdown pass. Athens Academy (11-0) took the lead midway through the quarter and added a late field goal for the final score.
The Patriots (6-5), who barely edged out Whitefield Academy for the final playoff spot, scored twice in the second period following a pair of interceptions by Jacob Delk.
Mt. Pisgah took the lead on a 15-yard pass from Aaron Winchester to Ryan Felice, and needed to go only 10 yards after Delk's second interception, scoring on a run by Oz Dixon.
The Patriots had a chance to expand their lead in the third quarter, but a fourth-down pass by Winchester fell incomplete in the end zone after Mt. Pisgah reached the Athens Academy 16.
Winchester passed for 85 yards and rushed for 49 more, while Dixon and Austin Harper combined for 82 yards rushing.
