November 28, 2012
ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Running back-to-back with the 2012 presidential election at the beginning of November was an election held by Tami Gordon's fourth- and fifth-grade class of students with special needs at Alpharetta Elementary School.

The kids put their First Amendment right to freedom of expression into action by campaigning for the votes of their peers to be elected the mayor of "Tami Town."

Election Day was held on Nov. 5. The students running for mayor stood in the hallway with homemade propaganda and campaign posters.

A voting booth stood at the end of the procession of candidates. Here, students were directed to fulfill their civic duty and vote for their favorite candidate.

At the end of the day, when all the ballots were counted, Jacob Moore was pronounced the newly elected mayor of "Tami Town" for the rest of the school year.
