Mount Pisgah narrowly gains playoff berth

Squares off against No. 1 Athens Academy

November 21, 2012
ATHENS, Ga. – Mount Pisgah barely claimed the final playoff spot among Class A private schools by 3/100ths of a point, but that will get the Patriots a Friday-night date with top-ranked Athens Academy.

This is the first year the state's public and private schools in the smallest classification are holding separate playoffs, with 16 schools qualifying in each category.

Mt. Pisgah has a 12.53 power rating, just ahead of Whitefield Academy, 17th at 12.50. Whitefield was second in Region 6-A East and Mount Pisgah was third. Whitefield defeated the Patriots 28-6, with both teams losing region crossover games to teams from the West sub-region.

The Patriots got the final spot largely on the strength of their early season victory over Model, which finished with a winning record and qualified for the Class AA playoffs.

It will be the first playoff game in football for Mount Pisgah, while Athens Academy is a perennial playoff participant.

The Athens Spartans are 10-0, but have had several close calls, including a 10-7 victory over Our Lady of Mercy, which narrowly qualified for the playoffs.

The Patriots bring a 6-4 record into the game, losing to No. 3 Walker and No. 7 Darlington in the region crossover game.
