Mt. Pisgah loses season finale against Darlington 31, 14

Patriots on playoff 'bubble'

November 14, 2012
ROME, Ga. Mount Pisgah lost its regular season finale 31-14 at Darlington last Friday, leaving the Patriots on the bubble for a Class A state playoff berth in the private school division.

The Patriots finished the season with a 6-4 record, and were ranked 15th among the state's Class A private schools going into last week's games. The top 16 qualify for the playoffs, and the teams ranked 16th and 17th both scored decisive wins over Mt. Pisgah, with the final rankings to be released this week after deadline.

The Class A playoffs begin next week, and Darlington is likely to be among the top-ranked public school teams.

The Patriots' Aaron Winchester passed for 218 yards, but the Patriots struggled to stop the Tigers. Darlington had scoring drives of 90, 97 and 85 yards to take a 17-0 halftime lead, and added an 80-yard touchdown drive in the second half.

The 97-yard drive came after the Tigers stopped Mt. Pisgah on fourth-and-2 from the Darlington 5.

The Patriots fared better in the second half scoring on a 51-yard touchdown run by Ryan Felice midway through the third quarter. Felice then caught a 32-yard pass from Winchester for the game's final TD. Winchester finished the night 19-of-35 for 218 yards. He also rushed for 38 yards.

Austin Harper added 24 yards on the ground, and caught three passes for another 24 yards. Mitchell Phillips also caught three passes for 36 yards.

Felice also led the Mt. Pisgah defense with 13 tackles. Jacob Delk finished with 10 tackles and Nicky Piccapietra added nine more.
