November 12, 2012 CUMMING, Ga. — Pinecrest Academy's fifth-grade classes hosted a mock presidential election on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 6.
Coordinated by fifth-grade history teacher Laura Kelley, students in kindergarten through fifth grades presented their completed voter registration card to fifth-grade "poll workers" and lined up to vote for president of the United States.
In celebration of Election Day, teachers and staff wore wear red, white and blue.
Parents and teachers joined to create an activity that simulated the voting process in every way. Because nationwide, youths have traditionally been under-represented during elections, the goal of this educational activity was to excite and engage students in the democratic process and to take the mystery out of voting.
Each voter received a sticker upon voting from the poll workers.
Six individual polling booths were set up with computers to allow voters to cast votes for not only the presidential candidates, but for other important issues like "favorite school supply" and "favorite cupcake flavor."
"If we get one committed future voter today, I'll be happy," Kelley said, "My No. 1 goal is to give my students a sense of civic virtue so that when they turn 18, they will vote their conscience and participate in the governance our great country."
