Johns Creek Gladiators score easy 34, 7 victory over North Forsyth

Deweese, Grayson share QB duties

November 08, 2012
CUMMING, Ga. The Johns Creek Gladiators tuned up for their Region 6-AAAAAA showdown with Alpharetta this week, rolling to a 34-7 victory at North Forsyth last Friday.

The Gladiators turned in a solid offensive effort without Skye Overton, who yielded his quarterback duties to fellow seniors Jack Deweese and John Grayson.

Overton contributed on defense with an interception. He will return to quarterback for the Alpharetta game.

Deweese and Grayson shared the position and led the Gladiators to six scores, including field goals of 47 and 49 yards by Kyle Fowler.

Chase Solomon rushed for 156 yards on 19 carries and two touchdowns, including a 64-yard scoring run on the third play of the game. A 24-yard pass from Deweese to Andrew Szambelan set up Fowler's 47-yard field goal before the Raiders scored their only touchdown of the game.

Deweese scored on a 2-yard run late in the opening period, setting up his TD with a 56-yard gain. He finished with 63 yards rushing and 51 passing.

Grayson put the Gladiators on top 24-7 at the half on a 59-yard pass to Szambelan, who had five catches for 118 yards. Grayson completed five of eight passes for 106 yards.

Both quarterbacks directed scoring drives in the second half, with Fowler kicking a 49-yard field and Solomon scoring on a 28-yard run. Johns Creek finished with 251 yards rushing and 157 passing.

Linebacker Tommy Welch led the Gladiators' defense with eight tackles and four assists, with Johns Creek limiting the Raiders to 222 yards.

Johns Creek coach Mike Cloy said Deweese and Grayson were due some playing time.

"[They] are great kids and very capable. They've been in the program since we opened, but they've just been behind Skye," Cloy said.

The Cougars are 5-1 in the region and 8-1 overall and are tied for first place with Alpharetta and West Forsyth, which holds the tiebreaker over both North Fulton teams.
