November 07, 2012 MILTON, Ga. – The Cambridge Bears will conclude their first season of varsity football with at least one victory, and have hopes of making it two wins before the season ends.
The Bears scored a decisive 45-13 victory over North Springs in their final home game of the season, improving the team's record to 1-7 heading into last week's game at Sequoyah.
Cambridge will end its season Friday at Osborne, a team the Bears have already played this season. Osborne won that game, the third of the season for Cambridge, by a 20-0 score, with the Bears staying close for a half.
Osborne and Cambridge are in opposite sides of Region 7-AAAAA, with the top four teams from each sub-region competing Friday for spots in the state playoffs. Osborne and Cambridge both placed fifth in their sub-regions and will play for a second time this season to fill out their schedules.
"The players have worked hard every week, and I told them it would pay off some time," Cambridge coach Craig Bennett said. "I've been proud of their demeanor all season."
The Bears jumped out to a 38-7 lead at the half, turning in strong efforts on both offense and defense.
Cambridge jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a 30-yard touchdown run by freshman J.D. White, who added two more rushing touchdowns as well as a 92-yard kickoff return, his third scoring return of the season.
The Bears also scored on a 15-yard pass from Kevin Little to Ryan Callahan and a 30-yard run by Ricky Nuckles. White and Callahan combined for 150 yards rushing, with the team gaining 230 yards on the ground.
Callahan also helped key the defensive effort, along with cornerback Brian Moore, who led the Bears with seven tackles and successfully defended several passes.
North Springs is headed toward its fourth straight winless season, giving the Bears an excellent opportunity to avoid a winless first year of football, something both Northview and Centennial were unable to do in their initial seasons.
"This lifted a weight off their shoulders," Bennett said. "You want to win for the kids, regardless of who you're playing."
