Dual enrollment students gear up for fall classes

July 31, 2012
Georgia Perimeter College's Dual Enrollment program is on track for another successful fall registration, with more than 800 students from high schools across the metro Atlanta area enrolled at the college.

Rising high school juniors and seniors in good academic standing can get a head start on their college careers with Dual Enrollment, which allows them to take college-level courses while pursuing their high school degrees. Students may take a few classes toward their freshman year of college or develop a plan of courses to graduate with their high school diploma and associate degree simultaneously.

Currently, Dual Enrollment courses are offered on GPC's Alpharetta, Clarkston, Decatur, Dunwoody and Newton campuses. College-level Dual Enrollment courses also are offered at Dunwoody, Milton, Johns Creek, Centennial and Roswell high schools.

Students who attend GPC Dual Enrollment courses at their home high schools are not required to pay student fees. Students who enroll in courses on the college's four campuses and Alpharetta Center are charged student fees. An average student fee bill is $195, which covers fees for technology ($50), student ID card ($10), student services ($30), athletics ($40) and health services ($20).

Students with a 3.0 GPA or higher can receive free tuition through the state's Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC). In July 2011, Georgia state legislators agreed to fund early college programs through the state budget instead of through Georgia's HOPE scholarship program. This allows students to retain their eligible HOPE credits instead of "spending" them on a Dual Enrollment course, says Jeff Meadors, GPC Dual Enrollment coordinator.

This year, home-schooled high school students also are eligible to enroll in Dual Enrollment courses. Meadors encourages prospective students and their parents to read the new GSFC information [s1] about the state's Accel program. Go to
