CUMMING, Ga. — A man found out too late the check he got for his car was a fake, according to a Cumming Police incident report.

A man told officers he had placed his 1999 Chrysler Town and Country on Craigslist.com to sell.

A woman responded to the ad, and they agreed to meet at Publix, 580 Atlanta Road, at about 7:30 p.m. Jan. 7.

She gave him a $2,750 Bank of America cashier's check, which he accepted as payment.

The man said the woman removed the Georgia tag that was on the car and replaced it with an Illinois tag, but the man did not write down the tag number.

On Jan. 8, the man said he went to a Bank of America to confirm check's validity.

The man gave the account number on the check, and it returned valid.

Then, when the man went to deposit the check into his account, the bank said the check was not real.

The man told officers he got the woman's name and Austell, Ga., address.

Officers said the address given does not exist and the zip code belongs to the city of Auburn, Ga., not Austell.

Officers checked Craigslist.com to see if the car had been reposted but found nothing.
