Forsyth Deputies catch scammer on phone

November 25, 2013
CUMMING, Ga. — A woman called 911 while she was on the phone with a man who threatened her with jail time, according to a Forsyth County Sheriff's incident report.

A woman in the 2000 block of Gatlin Way told deputies a man who claimed to be from the Internal Revenue Service called her repeatedly Nov. 12 and demanded she pay her "tax debt."

She said he threatened her with jail and other legal resources if she failed to pay or hung up the phone on him.

He told her to drive to a store and purchase prepaid credit cards, because they were the only form of payment the government would accept.

She drove to the store with the man still on the phone and bought three Green Dots brand prepaid credit cards totaling $1,514.

When she returned home, she called 911 and kept the man on hold.

When deputies arrived, they dialed the man's phone number and were able to talk to him for a few minutes until he hung up after the deputies said they were calling on behalf of the woman.

The scammer got back on the phone line with the woman and again threatened her.

He said she committed a violation by calling police and she would have to appear in court in Washington, D.C.

Deputies told the woman to tell the man she would wait to be served with a subpoena before making the trip, and then he hung up.
