Driver on cellphone almost cause a multi-car accident in Cumming

October 25, 2013
CUMMING, Ga. — A driver on a cellphone couldn't stay in his lane, suddenly hit his brakes and almost cause a multi-car accident, according to a Forsyth County Sheriff's incident report.

A deputy spotted a blue Dodge Caravan that traveled southbound in the right lane on Ga. 400 at about 10:30 a.m. Oct. 16.

As the deputy drove by the van, he saw the driver, who was on his cellphone, fail to maintain its lane and cross over into the left lane.

The deputy said he had to swerve onto the emergency shoulder and grassy area to avoid an accident.

The deputy got back onto the road and drove up in the left lane beside the van.

As the deputy attempted to get behind the van, the driver suddenly slammed on his brakes.

The cars behind the van slammed on their brakes and swerved onto the emergency shoulder and grassy area to avoid an accident.

The deputy said these actions almost caused a multi-car accident.

Makhamat Aliyev, 47, was charged with reckless driving, failure to maintain lane and failure to exercise due care, all misdemeanors. Aliyev was taken to Forsyth County Detention Center.
