Alpharetta neighborhood has rash of cars entered

Many left unlocked, items on seats taken

April 05, 2013
ALPHARETTA, Ga. Eight vehicles were broken into April 3 in a neighborhood just off Windward Parkway.

Vehicles parked on Cogburn Ridge Way, Cogburn Ridge Road, Traywick Chase and Lunetta Lane all were hit by unknown suspects. According to police, many of the vehicles were unlocked and the stolen items ranged from cell phone chargers to GPS devices and briefcases, even makeup. Two vehicles had windows smashed but nothing was taken.

One car had $150 cash in it.

"These were thefts of opportunity," said Alpharetta Police Spokesman George Gordon.

Many of the vehicles had items lying in plain sight inside them. Coupled with unlocked doors, Gordon said they were prime targets for a thief.

"Don't leave items of value in plain sight in your vehicle unattended," Gordon said.

It is unusual for such a Crime to happen outside of the commercial areas of the city such as the mall, where "entering auto" crimes occasionally occur. It takes a matter of seconds to break into a vehicle, Gordon said.

"Most metro [Atlanta] agencies have seen an increase in entering auto offenses," Gordon said. "However in Alpharetta, our numbers remain low and our goal is to eradicate this crime."

Police have increases patrols in the area.
