Accepting ride lands man in Forsyth County jail

April 01, 2013
CUMMING, Ga. — A man ended up getting a ride to jail instead of to his destination, according to a Forsyth County Sheriff's report.

Matthew Lee Shelton, 23, was arrested for obstruction of law enforcement officers and probation violation, both misdemeanors.

At 3 a.m. March 20, a deputy on patrol near the 3400 block of Keith Bridge Road saw a man walking along the side of the road.

The deputy pulled over to check on the man and asked where he was headed. The man told him he was headed to Granny's Store, 4820 Dawsonville Highway.

Because the location was almost seven miles away, the deputy offered the man a ride and he accepted. Before allowing Shelton in the car, the deputy checked with FCSO dispatch and found Shelton had a warrant out for his arrest.

The deputy then attempted to restrain Shelton to place him under arrest. Shelton struggled with the deputy and refused to get in the car. The deputy threatened to Tase him and eventually used pepper spray to get Shelton into the car.

Shelton was transported to the Forsyth County Detention Center.
