February 15, 2013 ROSWELL, Ga. – A 91-year-old woman was the victim of a scam Feb. 1, resulting in thousands of dollars stolen.
Roswell Police Spokeswoman Lisa Holland said the victim received a phone call saying she had won $150,000 in a drawing. In order to claim her prize, she needed to first pay for fees of the drawing, costing $385. The victim sent off that check to a Pennsylvania address.
"He calls her the next day, says there are additional fees and he needs another check for $12,000," said Holland.
The woman again mailed a check.
Holland said the woman was the victim of a scam that frequently targets the elderly. A scammer calls the victim and tells them they won a prize. In order to claim the reward, taxes (or some other cost) must first be covered.
"You never have to pay [upfront] for anything you win," said Holland.
She also cautioned against giving money to anyone over the phone.
