Man's identity compromised at Cumming hotel

January 22, 2013
CUMMING, Ga. — Someone claiming to be from the front desk of a hotel collected credit card information from a guest, according to a Forsyth County Sheriff's incident report.

A guest at the Hampton Inn, 915 Buford Highway, told deputies someone called his room around 9:30 p.m. Jan. 13, and said he was from the front desk. The caller told him the hotel's billing server went down and they needed to verify his credit card information.

When the victim told the caller he would just come to the front desk to give the information, the caller said they were asking everyone to stay in their rooms and city police were notified of the situation.

The victim gave the caller his billing information. When the hotel guest hung up, he called the front desk to verify the call and the clerk told him the call didn't come from the hotel's front desk.
