Suspect charged with burglary may be linked to other Cumming break-ins

November 20, 2012
CUMMING, Ga. — After responding to a complaint of a suspicious person possibly breaking into cars at Movies 400, Cumming Police Department officers located a 17-year-old suspect.

The youth fled the scene on foot.

This newspaper's policy is to not print the names of suspects under the age of 18.

Police officers pursued the man, who ran across Ga.9 / Atlanta Road and into the woods behind the Mary Alice Park Office Complex. Several citizens who witnessed the incident also gave chase.

He was arrested shortly thereafter. Further investigation revealed four cars had been broken into, one of which had the window shattered by a hand tool.

The perpetrator made off with about $800 worth of portable electronics and other items, most of which were recovered by a sweep of the area following the foot pursuit, said Sgt. Bryan Zimbardi, a spokesman for the Cumming Police Department.

It appeared that the 17-year-old lost most of the stolen property while attempting to jump a chain link fence behind the movie theater.

The man accused of breaking into the cars is also suspected in a similar case earlier in the week that happened at the Georgia Department of Driver Services off Pilgrim Mill Road.

Officers made contact with him near the location and later located stolen items on the side of Pilgrim Mill Road, which were returned to their owner.

It is unknown at this time how many other similar incidents may be linked to this suspect, who faces four counts of burglary, three counts of theft by taking, criminal damage to property and misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

The suspect had minor cuts and scrapes on his hands and abdomen from his attempted flee through the woods. He was transferred to the Forsyth County Detention Center after his arrest.
