FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. A Cumming man was arrested after deputies caught him removing catalytic converters from cars parked at an auto body shop Aug. 25.

Clayton Corey Mayers, 32, was charged with possession of tools for commission of a Crime, criminal damage to property and loitering, according to a Forsyth County Sheriff's arrest affidavit.

About 3 a.m., a deputy doing business checks along McFarland Parkway saw a flashing light in the parking lot of 400 North Collision and Service Center, 857 McFarland Parkway in Alpharetta. The deputy became suspicious and investigated.

When asked what he was doing, Mayers told the deputy, "Not something I should be doing."

"I was just trying to get some converters off these cars 'cause they are junk cars and no one is using them," Mayers said.

Catalytic converter theft in the county is a growing problem.

Mayers said he was using a sawzall to cut off the catalytic converters, but the deputy caught him before he could completely remove the item.

Mayers was taken to the Forsyth County Detention Center for processing. His bail was set at $12,000.
