FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Two Forsyth County Sheriff's Office deputies received the Deputy of the Month honors for the month of June.

Deputy Heather R. Olson, of the south precinct, and Deputy William V. McConnell, Jr., of the north precinct, were recognized by their supervisors.

Capt. Ron Freeman, south precinct commander, said that on May 28, Olson was dispatched to the Cumming Police Department to meet with an upset mother and her daughter about a possible child molestation.

"When Deputy Olson arrived, she immediately began calming the hysterical mother so she could obtain some information to determine what had occurred," Freeman said. "She never left the hysterical mother's side and continued assuring them both that all would be okay and that they were doing the right thing and that they would be safe."

Freeman said that because of Olson's overall kindness, concern and sympathy, she was able to connect with the victim and her mother, putting them at ease.

"Her actions made the investigation much easier for the criminal investigators," Freeman said.

An arrest of a relative was later made, charging the person with numerous sex-related crimes, including child molestation.

Olson joined the sheriff's office in August 2011.

Capt. Mark Flowers, north precinct commander, said McConnell was dispatched to a residence on May 21 after a 911 hang-up call.

As he was en route to the call, he was told that the call was actually a medical call.

The caller was stating that the 58-year-old man was gasping for air and having a possible allergic reaction.

When McConnell arrived at the scene, he found that the man was not breathing.

"Deputy Sheriff McConnell remained calm and began administering CPR until other rescue crews arrived. He even continued the compressions once EMS was on the scene in order to assist them," said Flowers.

The man regained a pulse and was transported to the hospital.

McConnell was named the Deputy of the Year for north precinct last year.

"He always remains calm and handles all situations with a superior level of professionalism," Flowers said. "He is an excellent role model."

McConnell has been with the sheriff's office since October 2010.

During the year, each Forsyth County Sheriff's Office precinct recognizes a Deputy of the Month. At the end of the year, a Deputy of the Year is selected from the 12 monthly award winners.
