CUMMING - Bowl for Kids is an annual outing that raises funds to support Mentor Me North Georgia, a non-profit organization that provides one-on-one mentoring relationships between volunteer adults and children. The 2014 event will be held at the Stars and Strikes Family Entertainment Center in Cumming, Saturday, February 22. Two sessions are scheduled: one at 10 AM, and the second at 12 PM.

Sylvia Cardona, Executive Director of Mentor Me, said "we invite our neighbors from throughout Forsyth County to join us for this year's Bowl for Kids. They can interact with our mentors and mentees and also have fun - that's part of what mentoring is about. They will enjoy the bowling party plus have the opportunity to support Forsyth kids that need mentors and friends. And we welcome corporate sponsors. The funds we raise help us match children with caring mentors," she said.

Jack Canouse, owner of Stars and Strikes, said that he and his business partner, "want to be a good neighbor, so we offer our facilities to Mentor Me and other local organizations that serve our community."

Conouse is a mentor himself. "I feel like I am helping a child, but mentoring also has had an effect on me," he continued. "It has made me put life more in perspective. But mostly, I can make a difference in a child's life. I encourage the adults in our area to consider becoming a mentor. There is no better way to have a positive impact on our community, and even more important, make a difference in the life of a child. It can have a transforming impact for a lifetime," Canouse added.

Mentor Me matches volunteer adults with children ages 6 - 17, who need and want a mentor. Men are matched with boys, and women are matched with girls. They share everyday activities such as sports and movies, or going to the zoo, museum, and music events. But most important, they become friends, according to Cardona.

Mentor Me is a Forsyth County United Way agency. However, the organization depends on private donations for 50 percent of its funding. To participate in the 2014 Bow for Kids, contact Sylvia Cardona at 678-341-8028 or sylvia@mentormenorthga.org. Go to their website www.mentormenorthga.org.
