Forsyth County Senior Services face cuts

Government shutdown has caused strain on services for elderly

October 29, 2013
FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A program that funds home-delivered and group meals, transportation and short-term care for seniors is facing budget restraints due to the federal government's budget sequestration.

The federal sequestration has made an impact in 2013, said Michael Bohn, the director of the Forsyth County Senior Services.

"If a senior calls and they want to sign up to receive transportation, [the state] recommended we put them on a waiting list," Bohn said.

So far, there are five seniors on that list, but Bohn said he expects the list to grow.

"I started in November last year and in the past six months, the calls and needs for seniors regarding home-delivered meals, respite care and congregate meals has increased at a rapid pace," Bohn told the Forsyth County Commission at their Oct. 22 work session.

County commissioners asked for an estimate on how much it would cost the county to foot the bill.

"I hate to turn these people away," said Commissioner Cindy Jones Mills. "If we could just fund that if the federal government doesn't."

In the meantime, seniors will be put on a waiting list.
