JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — On Sept. 27, the excitement coming from Johns Creek Elementary could be heard half a mile away with their Fun Run.

Physical education teacher Kim Autry designed the course for the event while David Krosner, the music teacher, served as master of ceremonies.

Krosner played music while students ran laps, one grade at a time.

Each class chose a nickname and submitted types of fun laps to do for the event such as the "scream and run lap," "act like a cat," "moon walk" and "monster walk."

Many classes made banners to show their class spirit.

Leading up to the event, Fun Run volunteers greeted parents and students during morning carpool to remind them to collect sponsorships and to build excitement. They also held a pep rally complete with Fun Run cheerleaders to motivate students.

Students earned prizes for collecting sponsorships for the run, and there was a friendly competition among classes to see who could raise the most money for the school.

JCE PTA collected about $28,000 for the school during this event.

This event was managed completely by JCE's parent volunteers, led by Fun Run committee members Cheri Proels, Sandra Caviness and Kelli Bercik.

The volunteers set up tents, manned the water station, made sure that school mascot Jaggy made an appearance and helped clean up afterward.

Because the event was organized 100 percent in-house, the profit will go directly to the school. JCE PTA plans to use the money raised for grants, programs and school enhancements, which include an outdoor classroom space.
