October 16, 2013
CUMMING, Ga. — For the ninth year, the Cumming Greek Festival will celebrate the taste of the Mediterranean and bring a slice of Greece to Cumming and North Georgia.

The Cumming Greek Festival starts Friday, Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. and goes to Sunday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m.

Saints Raphael, Nicholas and Irene Greek Orthodox Parish of Cumming sponsors this annual event at their 16-acre property, 3074 Bethelview Road.

New this year is a 5K Run/Walk dubbed "the Toga Trot" to build even more fun and fellowship into this family-friendly annual event.

Each year, a portion of the monies raised goes to local charities in Forsyth County such as The Place of Forsyth County and Jesse's House.

"Our parish is committed to our local community and helping those in need," said Johnny Melts, one of the event organizers.

All of the crowd favorites are back.

Homemade Greek pastries, along with authentic Greek food like gyros, souvlaki, pastitsio, dolmades and lamb are on the menu. There's even a baklava sundae that is always a big hit with children.

Music and period-costumed Hellenic dancers will perform various traditional Greek dances throughout the three-day event.

Shops with art, jewelry and other Aegean items will complement the culinary offerings and entertainment. Shopping for merchandise from Greece and local vendors will offer something for everyone, Melts said.

Also back this year is the children's area featuring a petting zoo.

One of the highlights of the festival is also the informative tours of the parish, which take place daily at the festival. The Christian church, a canonical Greek Orthodox mission parish of the Greek Orthodox Diocese of Atlanta under patronage of Saints Raphael, Nicholas and Irene, has more than 100 families in its community.
