Johns Creek City Council asks patience in mayoral probe

October 04, 2013
In response to recent public statements by [Mayor] Mike Bodker, the Johns Creek City Council sincerely asks the Johns Creek community to understand the following regarding Bodker's investigation:

• The investigation is the inevitable result of repeated allegations against Bodker's misconduct and unethical behavior, allegedly occurring as late as 2013 and as early as 2006. There is no other reason.

• The Sept. 18 special called meeting was necessary because the next regularly scheduled council meeting (Sept. 23) had already been allocated to zoning cases. There would not have been enough time to discuss the investigation without putting undue limits on the work of both the public and council.

• The investigating attorney's request for Bodker's personal cellphones are because he has used his personal cellphone for city business for the last seven years, despite having a city cellphone at taxpayers' expense.

• Bodker is accused of using his position to get reduced rent on apartments he rented for personal use. Therefore, how is it possible to investigate the charge without asking for his personal banking information?

• Bodker says he has the banking information, but refuses to turn it over to the investigator, even if it would clear up this particular allegation. Whatever the reason for this misguided decision, the costs associated with the subpoena should be laid directly at his feet.

• By "cross pollinating" his public and personal life to the extent he has, he has created the very situation he now characterizes as an invasion of his privacy.

• Bodker has cleverly misled the media and this community, while delaying and/or refusing cooperation with the investigation. Unfortunately, by dragging it out as much as possible, he has caused the cost to go up as he continues to stonewall each day as we get closer to the election.

"We had two choices: to sweep these allegations under the rug; or to have each allegation independently investigated in order to find the truth," said Councilmember Randall Johnson. "We did not take the step of hiring an independent legal investigator lightly. We are taxpayers, too."

Councilmember Karen Richardson added, "We earnestly ask our community to carefully discern what they're hearing from Bodker, and continue to be patient. As soon as Bodker starts truly cooperating, the attorney can issue his report, and we can once again provide the honest representation our community deserves."

City Council of Johns Creek is a disgrace

Shame on Randall Johnson, Karen Richradson, Brad and Ivan! Your witch hunt to promote your buddy Bev has cost our city money and you have defamed our great city. Thank you, Kelly Stewart and thank you, David BelleIsle for standing up for the truth! Vote Randall Johnson and Kelly Richardson out! Their egos have cost us enough! They are unproductive, vindictive and costly to our city!

Defamed our great city? Seems like Bodker did that all by himself!

I want a city council that does something about any misconduct. Look at the DA and many other crooked politicians in Ga. and the charges against them.

Let's clean up any corruption in this city, not juist bury our heads in the sand and say, "Oh well".

I am voting for Bev Miller, Karen Richardson, and Randy Johnson for all the reasons above.

This appears to be a "fishing trip"

The council is simply prospecting for gold on a rumor or a hunch. They have nothing (or they'd simply file charges.

    What a crock.

    Marsha,
What are you accusing the mayor of doing!? Witch hunts weren't good for Salem and they are hurting johns Creek. Using tax payer dollars to investigate the mayor when there are no charges is WRONG! Vote them out!

There are charges against Bodker. You seem like you want to ignore them.

Well as a resident of Johns Creek, I am for rooting out the unethical practices of politicians.

You have to wait until all the subpoenaed info comes back to the council. Then officially charge Bodker.

Shame on Randall Johnson, Karen Richradson, Brad Raffensperger and Ivan Figueroa! This fishing expedition to promote Beverly Miller is costing the City of Johns Creek valuable time and money. What an absolute waste of our resources.

Thanks go to Johns Creek City Councilwoman Kelly Stewart and Alpharetta Mayor David Belle Isle for standing up for the truth in this witch hunt.

I cannot wait to see the day when Mike Bodker gets re-elected and files a lawsuit against the above criminals that have participated in this witch hunt.

    Charges
    October 07, 2013 | 11:44 AM

According to this article, written by the accusers, the charges are: using his personal cellphone for city business and using his position to get reduced rent on apartments he rented for personal use.
Even if these accusations are proven true, I'm not sure this was worth the expense and negative publicity to our city. I guess the citizens of Johns Creek will decide on November 5.

I've read all of these comments. Nobody seems to understand why the investigators are looking into the 2 apartments rented by Bodker for his personal use. He's married with 2 children, right? I was confused too until he appeared at the Johns Creek Family Fall Festival with a girl young enough to be his daughter whom he was introducing as his "significant other." What did I miss?

There is a lot of debate here and do not like to get involved but, as a mom in this city I feel I must stand for what is right. I am in support of family values. I know many mothers who have had unfaithful husbands in the community and it is my belief that these men are a disgrace to not only our city, but to family tradition as a whole. That being said, when I attended the Fall Festival I witnessed something extremely unsettling. I have no confirmation that the woman with him was his girlfriend or mistress or whatever other rumors are going around. However, I did witness behavior between him and the woman he was with that was highly inappropriate. If I ever saw my husband behave the way Bodker did with this woman you bet your bottom dollar I would be humiliated and ashamed. I do not believe it is right to elect a man to office that treats his wife and family with such disrespect. As for the comment claiming he introduced her as his "significant other", I have no proof. But I definitely would not be surprised if it was true. I also wouldn't be surprised if those apartments were being used as nothing more than a cheap hotel room for his nighttime activities with this woman. I am not one for politics, but if we elect this man then we are sending a message to all of the men in our community that they may treat their families with disregard and bring young women to whom they are not married as dates to public family events. It makes me sick to even fathom that he is even a possibility as a winning candidate. I hope that you all see through the mask of a politician who is nothing more than a flirt and a disgrace to our city. Let's re-elect Clinton while we're at it.

It seems as if every person blogging in support of Mr. Johnson, Mrs. Richardson, Mrs. Miller have to resort to personal attacks and innuendo related to their opponents as opposed to actually telling us why their candidate can move our city forward. How about sticking to the issues instead if sticking it to others.

    Ms. Drake,
It isn't innuendo if I've seen it with my own two eyes. And it isn't a personal attack. I want to know if the mayor used his office to gain favors such as reduced rent for a girlfriend. Married or not, cheating or not...is he using the office to gain personal favors? And why won't he produce rent receipts as the investigator has asked for? And why is he ignoring a subpeona? This isn't innuendo...these are legitimate questions with, as yet, no replies.

Really?? "I am not one for politics, but if we elect this man then we are sending a message to all of the men in our community that they may treat their families with disregard and bring young women to whom they are not married as dates to pubic family events." Insinuating that if the mayor gets e-elected then it will be a free for all for the men of Johns Creek and families will be disregarded it laughable! I think the men of Johns Creek don't need you telling them who they can and cannot bring as dates to public events. It is none of your business what goes on behind closed doors of ANYONE'S life. Unless you are the Mayor's EX-WIFE (of several years-which maybe you are) it should not be your concern. Please stop attacking (what your perceive to be)the personal lives of people and focus more on the issues that really affect the city as a whole.
