May 14, 2013ALPHARETTA, Ga. – The 36th annual Atlanta Jazz Festival comes to North Fulton this month with two events featuring local jazz clubs as part of the 31 Days of Jazz.
The Atlanta Jazz Preservation Society and Jack Cashin will hold a night of jazz music beneath the stars.
The "Jazz under the Stars" music series returns May 17 with "Tribute to Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan," and local jazz legends Joe Gransden and Sam Skelton. This is the second event in the series. The first featured music by Benny Goodman.
"You cannot go wrong with a big band and Benny Goodman," said Philip Carroll, of the Atlanta Jazz Party, organizer of the event. "Each month, we will change the theme or performers. The theme resonates well with our fan base."
Since Chukkar Farm is a polo club, Carroll suggested visitors come early to stroll the property. Also, unless attendees have reservations, they should bring a chair or blanket.
The Jazz under the Stars music series continues every third Friday of the month at Chukkar Farm, 1140 Liberty Grove Road, Alpharetta.

The Velvet Note, Alpharetta's jazz club, will feature a night of dinner and jazz from 7 to 9 p.m. on May 28 with jazz saxophonist John Sandfort and a jazz trio backing him up.
"This is exactly what we offer on Tuesday nights," said Velvet Note owner Tamara Fuller. "Our Tuesday nights try to give people more than just a performance. We try to give a little jazz appreciation."
The performers take questions from the audience and go out of their way to explain about the background of the pieces they perform, Fuller said.
