May 13, 2013CUMMING, Ga. — The Brookwood Baptist Church and its 400-member congregation have come a long way.
From a little wood-sided country church with 23 members on a quiet dirt road to a brick-and-mortar building on a busy paved road, Brookwood Baptist Church members say they never lost sight of what is important — God.
To remember the church's 100-year history and celebrate the things to come, the community is invited to commemorate the occasion May 19 at 2775 Brookwood Road.
Festivities begin at 11 a.m., with a worship and communion service led by the Rev. Donnie Nix, followed by a meal provided by the church at noon and concluding with a program of song, speakers, dedications and recognitions at 1 p.m. in the church's sanctuary.
The events keynote speaker will be Jimmy Orr, pastor of Palmetto Baptist Church in Palmetto, Ga.
The event's keynote speaker is Jimmy Orr, pastor of Palmetto Baptist Church in Palmetto, Ga., whose family grew up in Brookwood and whose brother sings in the choir.
Current members, past members and families of current and past members are urged to attend.
"This little church by the side of the road has been a lot for this community and we are excited to be a part of it," said Kathy Mathis, who leads a Wednesday night service and class for children and has been a member for 41 years.

On May 8, there was another surprise.
After opening up the cornerstone on the church, members found a time capsule.
"We don't know what was in it yet," Mathis said. "It was like a safe deposit box with a combination lock in it. There's no combination, so we don't want to injure whatever might be on the inside."
A good day to open the time capsule might be May 19, Mathis said.
"We are just totally thrilled that our forefathers left us this," Mathis said, "whatever it may be."
