Animal shelter committee asks Forsyth County Commission for $351K

Additional funding to build office, work space

May 13, 2013
FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The Forsyth County Animal Control Shelter Committee asked the county commission on May 7 to reduce the overall scope and budget for the new animal shelter, but at the same time, asked for more funding from a different source.

Committee Chairman Dr. John McGruder asked to have the cost and scope reduced by $67,557 but to increase the project's budget by $351,627 to build office space and a work area for the animal control deputies.

The 13,700-square-foot facility broke ground two months ago on a 4-acre lot off County Way. The estimated completion date of the facility is early 2014.

McGruder said the committee listened to recommendations by Dr. Lanier Orr, who operated the animal control shelter for the county since 1980 at their facility on 1902 Old Atlanta Road.

"It was his strong recommendation that the animal control office and shelter be located at the same place," McGruder said. "Today if someone has an animal picked up, they have to drive to the shelter to identify it, then drive back downtown to pay the fine, then drive back to the shelter to pick up their pet.

"That's a lot of added traffic, so that's the reason for the cost overrun," he said.

In other business, commissioners approved:

A request by the county's grants administrator to accept the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Recreational Trail Grant in an amount not to exceed $52,700 with a required in-kind match not to exceed $12,800;

Awarding a bid for the installation of artificial turf at Coal Mountain, Sawnee, Fowler and Daves Creek parks to Sports Turf Company Inc., in the amount of $1,291,023;

Transferring the match amount of $188,000 for the Fowler Park Stream Restoration Grant to the stormwater line item for the design of the Fowler Stream Restoration Project;

Authorizing the Engineering Department to advertise for the proposed right of way abandonment of Bertha Drive located in Land Lot 488 in the first district and first section of Forsyth County, District 2;

Acceptance and improvement of Damascus Road for a distance of .4119 miles with a deeded 60-foot right of way;
