FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. On Sunday, April 20, two days before Earth Day, the Georgia Master Naturalist program was already celebrating at Fowler Park.

The group's goal was to try and get people to know and learn why the Big Creek Greenway in Forsyth County is important. They made bluebird houses for the trail and had signs made for each of the trees to educate the community as to what kind of tree it is and why it's important to the environment.

"I started as a volunteer in 2012 and was just drawn in from there. It's a fantastic cause," said Jeanie Davis. "Our long-term goal is to have signs all the way to Bethelview Road and McFarland Road, and we're going to help out the walking trail at Lanier Tech in the near future."

Also at the event was Forsyth County Extension agent Dr. Stephen Garton, who is a large part of the program.

"We need to increase consciousness about conservation," he said. "That's our biggest goal as a group and we really think we can connect with people through this."

    Earth Day/Trailhead Article
    June 07, 2013 | 12:47 PM

Thank you for the article on our Earth Day/Trailhead Tree Sign Ribbon Cutting event on April 20th.

As Speaker Bureau Chair for the Master Naturalist of Forsyth County, it makes my job a whole lot easier when the general public knows about us. Speakers want to come to our group once they know what we stand for and how we are improving the natural world.

Wish you had more pictures of the event. I know who has them should you want to do another article on the day.

Again, thank you for sharing this story with your readers.
