May 01, 2013ROSWELL, Ga. The Roswell Memorial Day ceremony will be May 27 at the Faces of War Memorial at Roswell City Hall. Exhibits open at 10 a.m. and the ceremony begins at 11 a.m. This year's featured speaker is Charles G. Shepherd, Jr.
Shepherd, a first lieutenant, served with the 121st Infantry Regiment, 8th Division in the European Theater from July 16, 1944 until the end of World War II in Europe. He received the expert infantryman's badge and the combat infantryman's badge. A platoon leader in K Company 3rd Battalion, he was wounded twice, receiving two Purple Heart medals. He also received two Bronze Star medals for meritorious achievement in ground combat against armed enemy in the European African Middle Eastern Theater of operations. He participated in five major campaigns Normandy, northern France, Ardennes-Alsace, Rhineland and central Europe. In 2002, he was inducted into the U.S. Army Officer Candidate School's hall of fame. He received the Silver Star for gallantry in action April 2, 1945 in the vicinity of Siegen, Germany.
The Atlanta Wind Symphony, with more than two decades of music, will perform at the ceremony. Radio personality Moby will again emcee the event.
Started in 1997, the Roswell Memorial Day ceremony has become the largest in Georgia and the Southeast annually drawing more than 6,000 people.
