ALS Awareness month kicks off this Saturday with the FIESTA 15k/5k

7th Annual Race Benefits the Emory ALS Center

May 01, 2013
CUMMING, Ga. -- ALS Awareness Month begins on Saturday with the 7th Annual FIESTA 15k/5k which benefits the Emory ALS Center in Atlanta.

The event takes place at the Forsyth Conference Center at Lanier Tech in Cumming.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a neuromuscular disease that attacks the brain and spinal cord. It is universally fatal, taking away the ability to move, speak, swallow, and ultimately breathe. It can strike anyone without warning and the average life expectancy after diagnosis is 2-5 years. Approximately 30,000 people in the U.S. are living with ALS; over 500 are in Georgia.

Formerly known as the ALS Run for Life 5K, the FIESTA 15k/5k features a 15k distance for long runners, a 5k distance on a certified Peachtree qualifying course, and a Fun Run. 16 teams of fundraisers have already raised over $14,000 and they will unite on Saturday to pay tribute to their loved ones living with, or who have died from the disease.

Participants will receive a t-shirt and goodie bag; all 15k finishers will receive a medal, and awards will be presented in the 15k & 5k races. The post race party will have music, refreshments, and a Fiesta of Fun!

Online registration closes at 3 p.m. on Thursday. Race day registration will be available starting at 6:45 a.m.

The FIESTA 15k starts at 7:45 a.m., the FIESTA 5k at 8:05 a.m., and the Fun Run at approximately 9 a.m.
