JOHNS CREEK, Ga. Six past, present or future district governors were on hand April 16 at the charter ceremony for the Rotary Club of Johns Creek North Fulton, a club that had faltered but now is reborn.

Current District Gov. Cheryl Greenway presented club President Rory Robichaux with its new charter and welcomed the club at the ceremony at Atlanta Athletic Club.

Greenway, who is a former president of the Roswell Rotary Club that sponsored the Johns Creek club, said she was glad to see the new chapter kick off with 26 members.

"That's a good core to build on," Greenway said.

Robichaux then welcomed its first honorary member, Mayor Mike Bodker, as well.

"It has been a great journey getting to this point," Robichaux said. "But this is just the first step along the way."

The Rotary motto is "Service above Self," and that is what the club will strive to exemplify, Robichaux said. That means contributing to the quality of life in the city and making a difference at home. But it also means joining Rotary International in pursing global goals.

An early goal of Rotary International has been the eradication of polio. Fifty years later, the disease is known in only three countries Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria. Now Rotary has a goal of eradicating malaria, a mosquito-borne disease that kills thousands every year.

"Locally, we will work with local charities to create Santa in the summer," he said. "For three weeks at Christmastime everybody does things for families and children in need. But the need is there all year long."

The Rotary Club of Johns Creek North Fulton (not to be confused with Rotary Club of Johns Creek Forsyth County) had dissolved after membership had fallen off and its charter suspended.

Rotary Johns Creek Forsyth is still chartered, but it is in the Forsyth District while Rotary Johns Creek North Fulton is chartered in Roswell's district.
