ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Three Alpharetta Girl Scouts were recently awarded the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award by the Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta.

Phoebe Bumsted, Jasmine Merlette and Haley Fica were recognized at a ceremony in the Egyptian Ballroom at the Fox Theater on Sunday, March 10.

The Gold Award, the highest award that a Girl Scout can earn, is given for completing an individual community service project encompassing project development, personal leadership and at least 80 hours of targeted service.

Bumsted created scrapbooks for patients with Alzheimer's living at the Benton House memory care facility.

Merlette developed a program to introduce younger girls to the health risks of obesity and the importance of exercise and a healthy diet.

Fica renovated the Alpharetta High School community garden introducing seasonal fruits, vegetables and herbs for use in the school's culinary arts program.

All three girls are members of local Girl Scout Troop 23309 and are seniors at Alpharetta High School.
