CUMMING, Ga. – With the weather warming up and summer just around the corner, the area's farmers markets will soon be opening. Nearly every city in North Fulton and Forsyth County has its own farmers market which specializes in locally grown produce and products.

"The average vegetable travels about 1,600 miles before it gets into your home," said Hank Gravitt, market manager for the Cumming Farmers Market in Forsyth County. "When something is locally grown, it's often picked the day before. That's a freshness you can't beat."

Participation in the farmers markets is typically restricted to within a certain distance from the market. Cumming's is limited to farmers either in Forsyth County or in the bordering counties. For Johns Creek, vendors must be within 100 miles of the city.

"Most of the products are from the farmers who grow them," said Kirk Franz, the city's recreation manager.

There are also often local products, such as honey, jam or other organic foods. Live music and games for children are often a part of the experience at the markets.

In a farmers market, visitors know exactly where a product was grown and can often speak with the farmer himself about the use of pesticides or chemicals.

Along with Johns Creek, the North Fulton cities of Alpharetta and Roswell also have large farmers markets.

Alpharetta is moving its market this year due to construction on the city's new City Hall. Instead of the City Hall parking lot on Ga. 9, the market will be around the corner on Old Canton Street.

The city of Milton has had a market for several years, however this year is still up in the air, said Linda Neil, the manager.
