ROSWELL, Ga. — Bomb explosions and terror attacks are common news updates for the West Bank and Gaza in the Middle East. A partnership by a top Israeli medical center in Tel Aviv and a church in Jerusalem plans to bring free medical care to Palestinian children of these war torn areas.

Even though the Rescue the Child partnership exists halfway across the earth, one family in Roswell decided to help out Assaf Harofeh Medical Center and Living Bread International Church's new project.

The Kents of Heatherwood Way hosted a fundraiser that attracted distinguished guests from all over Georgia and Israel.

"We are clear about our feelings," Kay Kent said. "We are standing with Israel."

At the event, Kent said that Karen Dunham, director of Living Bread International Church, told a story of a crippled boy who was dragged by ropes tied to his wrists and ankles because the family couldn't afford a wheelchair.

"That upsets me," Kent said. "I can't imagine a human being in that situation. Those are the children that Rescue the Child is bringing aid to."

In regions affected by Rescue the Child, every hospital, military and government has given full clearance to transport children for medical care.

Palestinian Arabs make up about 83 percent of the population in the West Bank and 100 percent of the population in Gaza. In addition, ages 0 to 14 are about 35 percent of the population in the West Bank and about 44 percent of the population in the Gaza Strip, according to reports done by the Central Intelligence Agency.

Dunham has been in Israel for the past decade. She worked in Jericho from 2003 to 2007 before relocating with Living Bread to Jerusalem. Many news outlets refer to her as the "Mother Theresa of Israel" for her work with the poor in Israel. She just published her first book, "Pushing the Pillars."

Aharon Cholow, general director of the Assaf Harofeh Medical Center, was also at the fundraiser. Along with Cholow, U.S. Rep. Paul Broun (R Ga.), Dr. Neil Shulman and Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens made appearances. There were about 150 people at the event.

Kent declined to comment about how much money was raised.

"What's so incredible about this is that it was done in Roswell," she said. "What you could see is that here in Roswell and in the state of Georgia, we have heart. You could see the heart of the people.

"Israel wants to let everyone know that they have heart, too. So we blended Israel's heart with Georgia's heart," Kent added. "It's a heart of mercy."

President George W. Bush plans to hold a fundraiser for Rescue the Child as well in the coming months, according to Kent.

With proper funds, Rescue the Child has the ability to reach more than 100,000 Palestinian children in the West Bank and Gaza areas, according to the Christian Post. The directors are continuing their fundraising through telethons and events similar to the Kent's.

"There is a unity regarding this matter," Kent said. "We're all here for the same cause, which is to help the children."
