February 06, 2013 ROSWELL, Ga. – Roswell declared the week of Feb. 7-14 as "Marriage Week," honoring that sacred institution.
While marriage is widely known as the bedrock of society, not everyone takes into account the tremendous pressure that this bedrock is under. Sadly, many marriages have not been sufficiently strengthened to withstand the pressures and end up cracking their foundations and unintentionally hurting each other.
Neville Billy, of Our Marriage Matters marriage counseling, said marriage problems not only negatively impact a relationship, they also affect a spouse's performance at their job, their health, their well-being and their children.
"Many of these seemingly irreconcilable differences and conflict can be avoided," Billy said.
Married 31 years to his wife Donnella, who is also a marriage coach, Billy should know a thing or two about healthy marriages.
Among the many tools the Billys offer, is a quick "C5" reference: Communication, Care, Concern, Consideration and Compromise. Couples need to make it a priority to build and develop a consistent and practical plan that includes all these elements with the main ingredient being "romance," which often gets neglected. This is why the Billys believe and promote "Dating your Spouse" as an integral part of a healthy marriage.
Dating your spouse makes time for romance and helps couples remember what made them fall in love with each other rather than the pressures of life that tend to distract.
"I used to think that dating your spouse is not optional, it's essential," Billy said, "but I've come to realize that dating is not only essential, it's critical."
Marriage Week in Roswell is Feb. 7-14. A complementary date night for married couples is offered Saturday, Feb. 16 at 4 p.m. at the Best Western Roswell Suites, 907 Holcomb Bridge Road, Roswell.
The event will provide married couples with a free session and marriage guidebook on how to protect and preserve their spouses and marriages amidst the stresses and strains of everyday living.
