CUMMING, Ga. — Demolition of structures were underway last week for the new Forsyth County Courthouse and Jail. The structures could take up to 45 days to completely be razed.

The structures to be demolished are the parking deck at the intersection of East Main and Mason streets, a government building and professional building, all on the site of the new courthouse, and a small building on the site of the new jail.

Inmates at the Forsyth County Detention Center will not be moved during the construction of the new jail.

If small portions of the jail need to be demolished as the project progresses, the Hall County Jail will be used to house inmates temporarily.

The new courthouse and jail projects were approved by Forsyth County voters in November 2011 as part of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) VII program.

During the demolition, residents can expect to see a lot of activity near the site in downtown Cumming. Work is scheduled to occur from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Sidewalks near the site will close as needed throughout the course of the project.

No extended road closures are expected, but intermittent lane closures on the streets surrounding the parking deck may be needed.

Traffic arraignment attendees and others doing business at the Forsyth County Courthouse can use the parking lot at the southwest corner of Maple Street and Castleberry Road.

Parking areas for both the public and for county employees are designated at the County Administration Building, 110 East Main Street. Additional weekday parking from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. is available at Cumming Baptist Church, 115 Church Street, spaces marked with a red dot.
