ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Angela Yang has been playing the piano since she was in kindergarten. Today, the Alpharetta resident plays at a level far advanced for her 13 years and is considered one of the top pianists for her age group in the state of Georgia.

Yang has garnered quite a bit of recognition for her talent at the keyboard, including a second place award in the highly competitive Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) spring piano audition. She also won the Master Class Award in GMEA's 2012 Piano Solo Audition, playing Shubert's Impromptu Op. 90 No. 4 in A-flat Major.

An eighth-grader at Wesleyan School, Yang is a well-rounded student, balancing her studies with extracurricular activities like working on the school yearbook and morning TV show, playing in the band and competing on the swim and soccer teams. But she always manages to find time to relax and have fun, too.

"I like reading and art and listening to music in my spare time," Yang said. And when asked how she juggles it all, she just laughed and said overall, it's "not too much of a hassle."

Piano teacher Anne Sun, who has given Yang lessons since the age of 6 at Shinvinc Studio in Alpharetta, said that her student is not only gifted but also possesses two qualities that have ensured her success.

"Angela is very talented, but she is also very patient and dedicated," Sun explained. "She brings everything to the piano when she plays in competitions and concerts."

Noting that she'll enter high school next year, Yang is already thinking ahead to the new challenges she'll face, including scheduling her time. There is one plan she says is a certainty.

"I know I'm going to stick with my studies and playing the piano," she said.

And after high school? Yang said she'd like to attend Harvard University and eventually become an attorney.

Angela is the daughter of Allen and Mei Ling Yang and has a younger brother, Andy.
