January 22, 2013NORTH GEORGIA – In the Internet age in which we live, everyone seems to be connected to just about everything, whether it’s through an iPod, iPad, iPhone, laptop or cellphone.
But as we get more connected through technology, in a sense we get less connected with each other — face-to-face and person-to-person. So what’s a great way to rediscover the important relationships we have with family and friends? For us, it was a mountain cabin getaway in Blue Ridge, Ga.
With a grown son working in college and two daughters at two different colleges, it’s hard for my wife and me to get the family all together. When we united in Blue Ridge, however, it was a time to put away our computer gadgets and enjoy each other’s company.
We played cards, enjoyed the dartboard and pool table in the game room, told stories and jokes and, in general, had a grand time. Away from the bright lights of the city, tucked away in the beauty of the mountains, we made some wonderful memories together.
It’s nice to have a family gathering at your house, but when you can get out of the house to a place as beautiful as Blue Ridge, it makes a world of difference. Hot coffee never tastes so good as when you are in a rocking chair on the deck of a mountain cabin, enjoying a breathtaking sunrise view sprawled in front of you.
A mountain getaway provides much-needed quality time with family and friends and is much easier to manage than you may think. There are several companies you can use to rent your mountain cabin, but we had a great experience with Mountain Top Cabin Rentals in Blue Ridge (www.mountaintopcabinrentals.com).
Our cabin was named “Cloud Nine” and that was indeed a perfect name because with the view we had overlooking the smoky ridges below, we felt like we were on Cloud Nine.
It rained part of the time during our three-night stay, but that didn’t put a damper on the experience of being in the mountains and the amenities we enjoyed in the cabin. We also went shopping in Blue Ridge, armed with discounts provided by Mountain Top.
We cooked our meals at the cabin, but there’s a nice variety of restaurants in town as well. For us, the cabin experience was all we needed, but there’s plenty to do in and around Blue Ridge including helicopter rides, zip lines, whitewater rafting, golf, tennis, spas, hiking, fishing, mountain biking, wineries, horseback riding and more. If that’s not enough, you can always take a ride on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway.
In choosing the cabin, it was nice that there was such a big selection. There are cabins big and small, some with great views and some so close to a creek you can here it babbling. Some cabins are also dog-friendly like Cloud Nine, which also had an awesome view and sleeps eight people.
In addition to the game room, it also had big screen TVs upstairs and downstairs, and of course, it came with a hot tub. For the times we wanted to connect, there was Wi-Fi throughout.
It was just what we needed because we wanted to have room to roam around inside, indoor entertainment and a place we could bring the “whole family,” which includes our two small dogs.
In an hour-and-a-half or so, you can enjoy an unforgettable mountain cabin experience in Blue Ridge. It’s an investment of a little time and money that will pay big dividends as you cherish close relationships you have with family and friends.
