January 22, 2013CUMMING, Ga. — Veterans and caregivers are invited to a Four Chaplains memorial service.
The service, hosted by American Legion Post 307, will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, at Parkway Presbyterian Church, 5830 Bethelview Road.
The Four Army Chaplains service remembers soldiers who gave their lifejackets to others when their ship, the USAT Dorchester, was torpedoed by a German U-boat off the coast of Greenland. The Dorchester sank, killing 672 people Feb. 3, 1943. This service marks the 70th anniversary of the tragedy.
"This event is memorialized by Legionnaires around the world at this time because it symbolizes our dedication to our fellow man and our mutual comradeship," said John Arant, a commander in the 9th District Department of Georgia for the American Legion. "Their example of love for others without regard to race, religion or creed remains an inspiration to this day."
A light luncheon will be provided by the Post Auxiliary Unit 307 afterward. For information, call Geoff Toman at 678-372-2463.
